Yup. Just heard the report about a half hour ago on MSNBC. Long battle with

That's a shame. She was another long time trooper and good ole gal.

Two of her works come to mind. Her appearance in STAGE DOOR. She was just
16? 17? And already coming off like a pro who could hold her own on screen
with the likes of Rogers, Hepburn and Arden. And then her Great American
Soup commercial. I'm not sure how old she was then, but she looked great,
danced terrifically and showed off her sense of humor.

Here's to ya, Ann!

I will always remember Eve Arden on some t.v. interview a gazillion
years ago claiming that on the set of STAGE DOOR, when word got out
that Jean Harlow had passed away, everyone on the set was sitting
there a bit shocked, but Ann Miller was on her own, working out a tap
routine, saying in rhythm: oh my God, poor Jean Harlow, Oh my God,
poor Jean Harlow, oh my God, poor Jean Harlow, oh my God, poor Jean
Harlow...

Thanks for the update. She was never a favorite of mine, but I must admit
she personified that multi-talented powerhouse supporting
actor/dancer/singer for musical theatre in the movies. 81? Wow...

I'm devastated. (How are you holding up, Bruce.) She was definitely a
favorite of mine. I can't think of a film she did in which *she* wasn't
terrific. I saw her on stage as PANAMA HATTIE and in FOLLIES and SUGAR
BABIES, for which she deserved the Tony. What a broad!

And EXACTLY as you'd expect her to be in person - funny, upbeat and just
ditzy enough to be a lot of fun.

What? Stephen! You mean you missed her as Reno in ANYTHING GOES (Paper Mill)?

During Ann's "I'm Still Here" in FOLLIES the offices of Paper Mill would empty
and people would stand in the back (or anywhere they could find a spot) and
watch. The first few performances, admittedly, were to see if she would
remember the lyrics. But soon it was clear that her status as entertainment
icon and living legend helped the song take on a whole new dimension. She got
standing ovations at every performance. The audiences adored Ann and she
adored performing for them. And that's something not even the most critical
theatregoer could ignore. God bless Annsie... She's undoubtedly teaching St.
Peter the time step right now.

Didn't see it, but I read the Times review--and only one line from
that review has stuck with me:

"If anyone has earned the right to sing 'I'm Still Here,' it's Ann
Miller."

I totally agree with you. She fits that song, if anyone does. I have the
recording, but I'm sure that seeing her must have been much better. I know
I used to laugh at the helmet hair thing when I was younger, but, yes she
had great gams!

Thanks, Steve -- I'm right there with you. I feel so badly; it's like yet
another part of my childhood and member of my family has gone. I had the
pleasure of meeting Miss Miller on several occasions. She was a warm, gracious
doll, and I really loved her. She made it to a nice age, but I was hoping we'd
have her around for even longer. She was such a vibrant person, so full of
"joie de vivre," that it's hard for me to believe that she isn't here anymore.

I still remember her on a Merv Griifin MGM theme show, saying "Oh,
honey, those were the days, weren't they?" Last night I pulled the
blinds at 11, and put four of her soundtrack Cds into the player. She
and Bob Keeshan open Upstairs in DOLLY! today.

Not in New York, but regionally or on tour. Last fall when I was
searching ebay for a souvenir program for Dolly with Mary Martin I saw
one with Miller, though there aren't any listed right now. See also her
unofficial bio page:

http://www.geocities.com/annmilleronline/bio.htm

I bet Steve N. will know.

And there is that famous story of the night she slipped on the Harmonia
Gardens stairs, fell, and broke her hair. (Not really.)

A friend of mine did Mame with her in stock in Atlanta and told the
story of her doing a big tap solo in the title number, eventually
tapping backwards into wings where she fell backwards into the arms of
waiting assistants who slammed an oxygen mask onto her face as the
chorus took over and then shoved her back onstage to finish the number.
Every night.

Annie was a trouper.

I wonder if they found a place for her to tap in DOLLY!?

I wonder if this was before or after her stint in the Broadway production? I
remember distinctly reading that on Broadway, her tap was to "That's How Young
I Feel."

It was in the early seventies, post B'way, and I may have misremembered
which song, but not the gist of the story or it happening in Atlanta.
