Hi, Moni. My last *dinner* theatre credits were in the mid 90's, and as
a producer of comedies. For two venues in Pennsylvania: PLAY IT AGAIN
SAM, NORMAN IS THAT YOU?, and THE SUNSHINE BOYS.

The real Steve. LOL

Not as much as having sat through performances of both.

Roasted duck on Thanksgiving tastes so much better when you've raised it
yourself.

I'm here. I saw "Follies" 2 weeks ago. The real stars were Jan Maxwell
and Danny Burstein. Bernadette was ok, but I kept thinking back to
Victoria Clark in the Encores performance in 2007. She was incredible.
There was one funny thing -- in the group numbers they kept putting Jan
Maxwell next to Elaine Page. The contrast in heights was hysterical.
The best number in the first act was "Mirror Mirror". I don't remember
seeing Terri White before, but I won't forget. Jane Houdyshell was
terrrific with "Broadway Baby" as was Elaine Page with "I'm still here".

Good times and bad times, I'm still here...

Saw the show in DC and I agree completely about Maxwell and Burstein.
At that point, Paige wasn't so terrific in "I'm still here", but that
well may have been the direction rather than her choices. I hear it's
much better in NYC. Also loved seeing Rosalind Elias on stage!!!

SN: She's one of my favorites on the recording, along with Terri White.
Is Ms. White the actress who was homeless not that long ago.? If anyone
on this thread has not joined Forgotten Musicals on Facebook (the one
with the larger membership) just request it-- and I (or any of your FB
friends who are members) can get you in.

SN: I just got the CDs. Bernadette was actually a little better than I'd
anticipated. I'm glad they went back to the original score ("Loveland"
and "Lucy and Jessie") and most of the original dialogue. However, I
feel that once again, characterization and tension were sacrificed for
better singing among the leads. Ron Raines just isn't a Ben. I don't
care for Elaine Page's "I'm Still Here" or Jan Maxwell's "Could I Leave
You."

I agree about Ron Raines. His singing was technically ok, but I felt no
dramatic thrill. The scene at the end of the first act culminating in
"Too Many mornings" should give you goosebumps. It didn't. After
seeing this I was hoping that Jan Maxwell would start doing musicals.
She's a terrific actress and her singing and dancing are quite good.
And Danny Burstein continues to impress me. I saw him in the complete
turkey "Harold and Maude" at Paper Mill. He and Donna Lynn Champlin
were the only saving graces in it.

SN: She did do Elsa in THE SOUND OF MUSIC which was recorded and the
Baroness in CHITTY which wasn't. She won a Drama Desk Award for the
latter.

"Smash" will debut on Monday, February 6 (10-11 p.m. ET).

"Smash" is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of
the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and
schemers who all have one common desire =96 to be a "smash."

The series centers on the process of creating a Broadway musical based
on the life of Marilyn Monroe =96 written by the successful songwriting
duo of Tom (Tony Award nominee Christian Borle, "Legally Blonde: The
Musical") and Julia (Emmy Award winner Debra Messing, "Will & Grace").

Julia recently began the process of adopting a child with her husband
Frank (Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James, "Shrek The Musical").

A rivalry soon forms for the lead role between a youthful, inexperienced
Midwestern beauty Karen (Katharine McPhee, "American Idol") =96 who is
trying to find fame in the big city against all odds =96 and stage
veteran Ivy Bell (Megan Hilty, "9 to 5: The Musical"), who's determined
to leave the chorus line and finally get her big break.

A tenacious producer Eileen (Oscar winner, Anjelica Huston, "Prizzi's
Honor") discovers the "Marilyn" project and jumps on board with a
brilliant director, Derek (Jack Davenport, "Pirates of the Caribbean"
films) =96 whose talent is matched by his cunning and egocentric
amorality.

Jaime Cepero ("Porgy and Bess") stars as Ellis, and Raza Jaffrey ("Sex
and the City 2," "MI-5") stars as Dev.

The series stemmed from an idea of executive producer and multiple Emmy
and Oscar winner Steven Spielberg ("ER," "Schindler's List").

The pilot was written by acclaimed playwright/screenwriter Theresa
Rebeck ("Mauritius," "NYPD Blue").

David Marshall Grant ("Brothers and Sisters"), Craig Zadan and Neil
Meron (Oscar-winning "Chicago," "Hairspray") and Darryl Frank and Justin
Falvey ("United States Of Tara," "The Borgias") also serve as executive
producers.

Original songs are written by Tony and Grammy Award winners Marc Shaiman
and Scott Wittman ("Hairspray," "Catch Me If You Can"), who serve as
executive producers as well.

"Smash" is a production of Universal Television in association with
DreamWorks Television and Madwoman in the Attic.

The pilot was directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer ("Spring
Awakening," "American Idiot").

My big fear with this is that a lot of the show will be devoted to
